Hey, Thumperites!
In anticipation of ordering my aftermarket slip-on muffler, today I removed the stock system, just to see if it was the chore I heard about. I clamped the muffler in a vise, (wrapped in canvas to protect the chrome), loosened up the joint clamp, sprayed the joint with WD-40, tapped it with a hammer, and had a beer. When I came back, I twisted the header left and right a few times, and the assembly came apart effortlessly! Then, just for the hell of it, I jury-rigged a Straight Pipe, which was a 2-inch X 24 inch long chrome pipe extension I bought at Auto Zone. I made a nice, tight assembly, then I fired it up in the garage. This startled our 2 dogs, and I let it idle awhile to circulate the oil in the valve train. Nice, deep resonant idle! Then I blipped the throttle. The dogs ran out in terror! This thing sounded like a 40mm anti-aircraft gun...loud and tooth-rattling! I wouldn't dare ride this bomb around the neighborhood without a baffle to bring it down to 100 db or so! This 2-inch pipe looks as ugly as the stock 4-inch "propane tank", so I'm going to order either a Jardine or a MAC slip-on, both of which are good looking pipes; not too fat and not too thin. Does anybody know anything about the MAC? How it sounds?
It looks pretty good to me in the Dennis Kirk catalog on a Savage.
Keep it under 6000...HAL
